AceShowbiz – Charli XCX isn’t too worried about her financial situation during the coronavirus shutdown as she doesn’t make much from live shows.
Like many artists, the “Boom Clap” hitmaker has been forced to put her career on hold due to self-isolation measures brought in to slow the spread of the virus, postponing concerts and recording plans.
However, she says that unlike some acts, who depend on gigs for their income, she thinks her finances will hold up despite not being able to play live.
“When the postponing and cancellations started happening, I saw a lot of artists (saying things like), ‘This is our lifeline as artists, this is how we make our money, please find a way to support the artists you love in another way’,” the 27-year-old tells Britain’s Music Week magazine.
“That was really interesting because, speaking candidly, I don’t really make my money from live shows. It’s not my main source of income, so it’s less of a blow financially. But I just feel scared that I can’t perform for my fans, live is a really joyous part of my life, I love performing live and I love watching artists perform.”
To combat the boredom of self-isolation, the star has been writing a “quarantine diary” for her fans and took part in a live stream on Instagram with Christine and the Queens, with online gigs with Diplo, Rita Ora, Kim Petras, and Clairo set to follow.
She is also considering new music – but doesn’t want people to think she is taking advantage of the crisis to promote herself.
“It’s quite an interesting time to release music, as long as you’re doing it in the right way,” she adds. “I’ve been speaking with some of my collaborators about possibly releasing something, but the intention behind it isn’t to be marketing something and really ramming it down people’s throats.”
