AceShowbiz – Meghan Markle might make her first major non-royal appearance at this year’s Met Gala. Weeks away from her official exit as senior member of Britain’s royal family, the Duchess of Sussex is reported to have been invited to attend the prestigious fashion event which will be held on May 4.
The 38-year-old will reportedly accompany British Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, whom she worked together with on the magazine’s “Forces of Change” issue, to the star-studded bash. “The Met Gala is for the Who’s Who of show business,” a source told The Sun. “Naturally Meghan was one of the first names on the guest list, and Edward’s team are excited that the two will go together.”
The former “Suits” star is said to be unlikely joined by her husband, Prince Harry, at what has been dubbed to be her first Hollywood appearance post-Megxit. “Meghan is keen to step out occasionally without Harry so that she can establish herself once more in Hollywood,” the source further claimed.
The 2020 Met Gala will have a theme of “About Time: Fashion and Duration” as it celebrates New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 150th anniversary. Inspiration for the theme came from Virginia Woolf’s time-travelling novel “Orlando” and a 1992 Sally Potter film adaptation. Therefore, Meghan is expected to present a “glamorous androgynous” look.
Meghan’s attendance at the annual fundraising gala will be a dream come true for Anna Wintour, who has co-chaired the event since 1995. When asked about her dream guests during a 2019 appearance on “Today” , she gushed, “I would love to have the Duchess of Sussex and Duchess of Cambridge together. They could leave their husbands at home; it’s the two of them I want.”
Meghan and Harry made an unprecedented move to break away from the royal family in early January. “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” their statement read.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will officially step down from their positions on March 31 with the closing of their office at royal residence Buckingham Palace. They have been lying low in Vancouver Island, Canada, but are expected to return to the U.K. for a number of events that concluded with the Queen’s Commonwealth Service in London on March 9.
