AceShowbiz – Tom Brady has opened up about his political stance after he’s famously known for his friendship with Donald Trump for years. In a wide-ranging interview with Howard Stern, the former New England Patriots player revealed for the first time that he was asked by Trump to speak at the Republican National Convention in 2016, but he turned it down.
The 42-year-old athlete shared the fact as he stressed that his personal support for the president doesn’t necessarily extend into politics. After Howard revealed in the Wednesday, April 8 edition of his “The Howard Stern Show” that Trump once tried to persuade the shock jock to speak at the Republican convention despite him being a Hillary Clinton supporter, Tom admitted that Trump also reached out to him, but he wasn’t going to do “anything political.”
Speaking of their friendship, Tom detailed, “He would call me after games, ‘I watched your game Tom, let’s play golf together.’ So 2003, 2004, that’s kind of the way it was.” He continued, “He would golf, and then he became someone that – he would come up to our games and stand on the sideline. He would cheer for the Patriots. He always had a way of connecting with people, and still does.”
“But the whole political aspect came, and I think I got brought into a lot of those things because it was so polarizing around the election time,” he shared, adding, “It was uncomfortable for me. You can’t undo things – not that I would undo a friendship – but the political support is totally different than the support of a friend.”
Asked if his connection with Trump ever caused a tension with his football teammates, the husband of Gisele Bundchen said, “No, no, never. (My teammates) know me. They know who I am. I was with them every day.”
NFL Network sports journalist Ian Rapoport later shared an excerpt of the interview on Twitter to highlight Tom’s reason not to support Trump politically, but people are not convinced by the NFL star’s claims. “Says the guy who had the MAGA hat in his locker … In clear view lol,” one person pointed up what made Tom’s political stance seem obvious. Another person reiterated, “IDK, Tom seemed to have stepped into politics when he had the hat in the locker room and said Agent Orange would be a great president.”
Someone else thought that Tom backtracked on his support for Trump because his wife Gisele doesn’t approve it. “translation: the wife said no friggin way!” the said user commented. Another sarcastically remarked, “Smart move by the goat,” while someone else slammed the six-time Super Bowl champion, “Tom Brady is a wolf behind that aww shucks demeanor. He’s shown that not above lying cheating and stealing. He’s no role model by any decent person’s standards.”
During the interview, Howard also brought up Trump’s past desire to have Tom marrying his daughter Ivanka Trump. Asked if he and Ivanka ever went on a date after the real-estate tycoon’s proposition, he answered, “That was a long time ago in my life…No, there was never that, where we ever dated or anything like that.”
“I know it’s weird, but Trump wanted that. He wanted Tom Brady to, let’s face it, bang Ivanka and form a relationship, a power dynasty. You know that, you know I’m not making that up,” Howard continued to press Tom, who laughed uncomfortably. The quarterback responded, “He never suggested that to me.”
He then suggested that he would rather not to talk about the “what-ifs,” stressing, “Look it all worked out for me anyway, I married the woman of my dreams” referring to Gisele. He added, “I think I married the most amazing woman, so I have no regrets.”
